RESEARCH OVERVIEW

“BRCA1's Role in Cancer Stem Cell Development and Risk”

Understanding how breast cancer develops and creating ways to recognize and reduce risk are key goals of our research. Using a sophisticated mix of molecular and cellular biology we are examining how transcriptional regulation of the BRCA1 tumour suppressor gene controls the development of breast stem cells and how alterations in this process leads to cancer. We are also examining how psychological stress leads to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. We are attempting to develop a blood based assay to assess risk in women based on methylation patterns in women’s DNA.
